Project: Ideas about general user interface

Friday, October 19, 2007

Currently, I am working on a Nutritional Application in AIR. I have been for a while, really stuck on the User Interface. I like some feedback on the few ideas I have:

Color Palette:

By browsing the web for nutritional sites, I came across a possible color palette for my nutritional application:

  • Orange(#DA6110)[Text]

  • Green (#75ae29 && 006600)[background]

  • White (#FFFFFF)[background]

I have no background in design, so it is hard to create color themes. If anyone can point me to some website or books I would much appreciate it.

Interface:

I figure many of the AIR Applications I have seen look like a website to desktop with a few exceptions( eg. Spaz). So taking from what Ed created versus many other AIR products I want to see what makes his great and what I can learn from his application to developing my own:

No Frame

By presenting no frame a developer can design how the whole application can look and feel. You have no boundaries, which is very cool. For example, Spaz has completely rounded borders. In my application as it stands now it has rounded corners with shadows. The possibilities are endless. So your not tide down to one square, rectangle look for your application.

Mouse Scroll / Paging

In Spaz currently, you can use your mouse to scroll down and up. Very useful and presents a very intuitive way of navigating in the application. Like website, Ed made twitter page for past tweets. For my application I could use paging when the results are too much to be in a single view. I may also create a unique way to index by page by starting alphabet character.

Keyboard Navigation

Currently, Spaz can use hot-keys to navigate in the application. Many times it is quicker for a user to use their keyword than to click on a icon. I personally think it make the user experience smoother and more productive.

Status Bar

Is always needed to alert the user for any updates, physiological presents feedback to the user that your application is doing something. AJAX is very nice, but if the user does not see it do something or expect a response in some way the user will think it is broken or nothing happened so they keep submitting until they see a response.[I remember seeing like 25 rows in my work database because I made no instant response to the user, so the user kept submitting 25 times till he saw it update.]

Hopefully someone else has some good ideas specifically for a nutrition application. As well as, features people would like. Currently I am working on getting Nutritional Data from Fast Food Restaurants. The features I am going to implement are:

  • Search for food (add them to your report) (generic food from SR-14 list the Government provides)

  • Manually Input calories

  • Track any nutritional fact information such as calories, fat, carbs....

  • Present a customizable report to track your food consumption by day,week,month,year...

Work In Progress…

Thursday, October 11, 2007

My full-time job and other obligations have took a large chunk of time away from finishing the blog.I so wish I had it up last sunday, but had to clean-up my house and visit my parents. Other than this web domain, In the last five months I have done too much: graduated from college, got my first full-time job, purchase a house, start developing a business plan with a buddy of mine, and starting to pursue graduate school. I will finish the blog by this sunday, hopefully. In general I will try to keep posting anything that is interesting and maybe rant here and there. I hope that this blog will help me become a better writer and present others with new knowledge based on my experience. If anyone does read my post, I do like comments and criticisms. So as soon as I finish developing the site I hope to see lots of comments. If you notice my past posts I will keep these first few short until I have time to express my thoughts. For now excuse the grammar and spelling, since I am truly dyslexic (hell w/o spell checker I would have spelled that “dsylexic”, go figure) it takes me 50% more time to write clear and concise so the five minutes it took me to write this ~8-10 minutes to re-read and fix all my english mistakes. I will make a promise my posts will get better!

My New Domain (The Original a-optic)

Sunday, October 07, 2007

Let me just state, that I am the Original a-optic for the record! I have had this alias for over 10 years. I am only saying that because some one registered a-optic.com and aoptic.com and it was not me. As you can see I have really old blog posts, I transfered that from blogger.com. I like blogger.com, but now it is all mine. Most my posts are not included since audioblogger was retired (yes, i phoned in many blog entries). The site was relatively quick to setup since most my time spent was on the template. I decided to go with Expression Engine because I have a lot to express i guess… In the next few weeks I will be posting many random things as well, smcangel will also post on here when she has some time away from medical school.Anyway I should get some sleep before tomorrow for now I will leave with a random picture I took in the Purdue Memorial Union:

Second Day - St. Louis

So, I forgot to say in the post before this that we checked into our hotel and we have the best view. The St. Louis Arch is seriously right outside our window. It is really cool to see every morning and evening right there. So, today we got up early and went to the oldest farmer's market west of the Mississippi River. It was the Soulard Farmer's Market. We found some breakfast there from an organic bakery that sold food at the market. It was really cool because it is an indoor market so it is open all year round. One booth even had hip scarves for bellydancing! And, this is kinda scary, but one stand actually had live chickens and ducks. I was like...eww. Anyways, after that we headed over to the Anheuser-Busch Brewery for a FREE tour. And it was really great. The tour of the factory was completely free and we got two free samples of beer at the end. And these samples were like 12 oz. glasses of beer. It was neat. The factory itself was much more than we expected. It was so nice, we couldn't believe it. It kind of felt like we were in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at Willy Wonka's factory...except without that scary boat part. We liked seeing the big fermentation tanks and stuff like that. It was beautifully landscaped too, for a factory, it was just amazing. Then, we went back and parked the car at the hotel and took a walk through the city. We ended up at Union Station and decided to eat lunch at Houlihan's. We wanted to eat at KC Masterpiece but apparently it closed. So, we ate and walked around there and look at the shops for a while. We even sat for like twenty minutes in Brookstone and got massaged by the three thousand dollar chair. After we finished playing there, we took the long walk back to our hotel and took pictures of the city. When we got back to the hotel, we thought that we would take a nap, but instead we walked over to get a snack from the mini-mart place that was down the block. Then, we took the car and drove over to Laclede's Landing. There were a lot of restaurants and bars there and we drove on the old brick roads that ran through that old, historic area. It was hilarious because the car was being jostled all over and we were bumping around in the car uncontrollably. It was hilarious. And when we left the area and got back onto the smooth, modern road, the car was still shaking like we were on the bumpy, brick road. We were laughing so hard. Anyways, so then we got back to the hotel and actually took a nap like we originally planned. We woke up, got dressed nice and went out to a really nice restaurant for dinner named Portabella. It was really good. We both gave it a 9/10. I had chicken ravioli and Alex had stuff chicken and we shared asparagus and some sort of chocolate dessert. It was fabulous. Then, we took a walk around the area and went back to the hotel to get some sleep.
