First Day - St. Louis

Friday, October 07, 2005

So this is the first night we are here in St. Louis. We went to dinner at a restaurant and had lasagna that had a really sweet sauce. Alex liked it, but it kind of gave me a stomach ache a little bit. That's okay though, I liked the garlic bread. smile Then, we went to President's Casino and gambled a whole sixteen dollars. We actually budgeted a whopping twenty dollars to use in the slot machines but you had to pay two dollars each for the card thingy to get into the casino and use in the machines...probably so they can keep track of you. It was a lot of fun. I've never been gambling before. We actually played every slot machine from one cent to one dollar and guess what? We came out ahead! So, we bought ourselves a drink at the bar. It's all good.

After a summer of reflection

Saturday, August 20, 2005

Within the course of the summer, I sat and reflected what I wanted to accomplish in life. I figure I am heading toward my goals of helping people by providing what I do best Computer Security. My only problem now is what direction shall I take after college is completed? I have several avenues I can pursue:
  •  Go to graduate school for MIS and become a Professor
  • Work for several years in the industry get my MBA in MIS or MS in CS, and guest lecture
  • Work for the rest of my lift as a business owner
Within every option requires a lot of dedication so it is not the time and effort spent in either option and hence my problem. In my own concentration I am taught to weigh my choices and choose the one that gives the best utility for me. Regrettably, all I find is that they are all indifferent. Life is not as easy to calculate in economic terms. Each will yield different rewards. Only time will tell what I end up choosing.

BOOKS, BOOKS, and MORE BOOKS!

This Summer was a reading frenzy. I have read many books this summer here was my summer reading list:

  • The Ugly American
  • Invasion Within
  • The Curious Enlightenment of Professor Caritat
  • 1984
  • Of Mice of Men
  • Very Short Introduction of KANT
  • The Art of War (again)
  • The Broken Fountain
  • Does not include standard that I need to read (HIPAA, ISO 9000)

It was a relaxing summer, thank god, compared to last summer at my, don’t know, friend Steve’s house. Last summer I had to endure the tragedy of having Steve loss his dad. Unfortunately this was the second biggest hit to Steve since his mother’s death two years earlier. After his dad’s death I then had to put up with his white trash trailer park girlfriend most the summer because she moved in after his death. It was so bad I ended up sleeping in my car for about a week. Being homeless for a week, I decided to move in my Best friend and old roommate Dave in Lafayette.

This summer all I had to do was relax read, go to class, and help with Measured Response. I then later found a good job doing what I want to do which is Computer Security Consulting. When the school year starts up I am also going to be looking for a new Research Opportunity, since Professor Roberto Mejias left for IU this year. I hope to be working at PHSI (Purdue Homeland Security Institute) instead of volunteering my time. It would be nice to get paid if you know what I mean. This coming semester will be busy like last but instead of going 21 credit hours (18 credits of classes), I will be going 18 credit hours (15 credits of classes). This will give me some time get be more involved with CERIAS and other entities on campus that can help me grow as a leader in the Computer Security Industry.
